![]() ![]() As he steps off the ship, he is greeted by a throng of reporters and well-wishers, all eager to hear his story and offer their support. He is disheveled, emaciated, and wearing the tattered remains of his island attire. Ultimately, the film is about Tom.The final scene of the film sees Noland returning to civilization, having been rescued by a passing cargo ship. And now he's very appreciative of those good things, which will help him go on with his life and be happy. The package taking him to the girl is a sign of this (I don't particularly like the girl/their interaction), the package is a simbol of his suffering but it took it to her, she might not be the love of his life, maybe they wont even fall in love but she might become something good (a good friend/an interesting person who will help him out of his depression/just someone to have a good talk with). Helen's choice was something out of his hands (like he mentions his own death was something he didn't seem to have control over) and he has to move on and, as he says, keep living, cause something good and beautiful will eventually come. Things that make it all worth it and living beautiful. The film's message is clear: Live isn't always fair, horrible things can happen from one minute to another and change everything drastically, but if you're patient you'll also get to see the good and unexpected things that also are part of life. I cried like a little bitch when he's talking to his friend and tells him about his suicide plans and how stuff kept happening that made him change his mind and helped him stay alive. Maybe this is what convinced him to let her go: She didn't choose him. It's understandable she hesitated but it was ultimately her choice to stay with her family. But she didn't seem to want it as much/wasn't willing to leave everything for him. I don't think she'd be a monster or a bad person for leaving her family and going with him, if that's what she really wanted. She just accepted she had to go back without arguing. So, clearly, her love isn't as strong as his. She kept him alive, basically, but she didn't even insist on going with him. Look at all he did to be with her, he stayed alive for her and thought about her every single day for four years. He knows she's having doubts, but I'm convinced he would have stayed with her if she'd insisted on going with him. He looks at her and says she has to go (or something along these lines). When she runs to him and gets in the car she's doing what she really wants, but she has doubts. It's quite clear she's still in love and also it's clear he's slowly realizing he's not part of her life anymore (there's pictures and stuff of her daughter and husband everywhere). She wants to go to him (Tom) and his new life wont allow it, she's clearly conflicted about this but doesn't put much of a fight. In that scene it's clear she's trying to walk back to the building and her husband holds her. It's clear she wanted to be with him the minute he reappeared, seems to me it was the husband who convinced her not to see him (not necessarily meaning he's a bad person, maybe he really thought she was too agitated to see Tom and needed time, maybe he didn't want her to have feelings for Tom again but I think it's the former) and afterwards persuaded her in the parking lot. Maybe she was happy as a clam before he reappeared but it doesn't seem to be the case in the scenes we see. ![]() Maybe feeling guilty for having those things (without him) and trying to make it seem like theyre not that good so he doesn't feel bad or maybe she's not really satisfied with them at that moment, when she has him there, the only thing she really wanted to have. When he's at her house and mentions how beautiful it is she says something about how she also has a beautiful mortage or something similar, when he says her daughter is cute she says "she's a handful". She didn't want to get over him and, to me, she doesn't look completely happy with her life when Tom's around. I agree with you, it wasn't Helen's choice to move on.
